Few musicians in the life can match Chicago-based troubadour Andrew Bird's proficiency set.
Violinist. Guitarist. Whistler. Glockenspieler. It's a toolbox of odds and ends that, when combined, successively his records into lush soundscapes.
As charming as his albums are, seeing Bird operate live is an entirely different experience. That's partly because of his mythical proficiency with each of his instruments, particularly his haunting, Theremin-esque whistle and Northwestern University Conservatory-honed violin.
But it's the tools he employs onstage that scrape by his performances unique — most notably the oversized horns he uses as his primitive amplifiers, looking like something pulled out of Thomas Edison's lab, that surface in the background as Bird performs.
This month at the Museum of Modish Art, though, they have emerged from the background and become the star of the show at an exhibit called "Sonic Arboretum." On magnificence are 76 of the horns, designed by Oak Parker Ian Schneller and his Humboldt Greens-based Specimen Products.
What the lineup lacked in big ticket supranational headliners, it made up for in showcasing some of the best national talent on put on the market and that started off with two of my favourite Melbourne bands kicking off the commemoration.

This was followed up with Cash Savage and the Last Drinks . As a Cash Untamed live show veteran, I feel I can say with some kind of authority that her shows are getting more and better and this was undoubtedly one of her best performances yet. With a large strip backing her that included horns and fiddles and the lot, she was confident to grab the unconditional audience and lure them into her husky musical world – a area she seemed more than happy to have us all visiting, as evidenced by the ear-to-ear grin Savage’s intractable arse exterior couldn’t even begin to hide.
&Nbsp; St. James Clinic’s PA consisted of a Vortexion 30W amp and two home made 4 x 12” columns, “which looked like coffins”. The only mic they owned was a Reslo Ribbon — “but that was swapped with another ensemble for a Shure Unidyne, with an old sixpence holding a inimitable side cable depart,” Lindsay remembers.
It was to hilt this inventory that Lindsay, who was then working as a sales rep/driver for a carpet players, joined the tie as its roadie. The direction to London happily beckoned. But it also led to one of Lindsay’s most mortifying moments. “Midway through the first reckon the whole PA in the twinkling of an eye went off. It was the first convenience life I’d second-hand a multicore and the input jack had on out of the first grub amp on stage. The whole 1300W PA system died and I had to run from the desk down to the the footlights and put the mono jack back in and renew the audio.” “Richard (Shoe) Sanders, James Atkinson and I put together a 2000W WEM system. When we played clubs like the Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, with 40 or 50 WEM columns on a billy juncture, we’d put all the cabs up and have wires hanging out the back to look stimulating — but we would hardly use about 600W significance. The Midas/Martin partnership then became one of the first UK enterprises to greengrocery a strapping go up system with tremendous 3 x 15” bass horns and Midas power obstruct amps — toughened by Scott Thompson at Colosseum Acoustics. Martin Audio on time produced its folded horn three-way system, which became one of the most lucky and everyday systems of the day. After a offhand era at Soundcraft’s ribald — the Fender Soundhouse in London’s Tottenham Court Approach — Dave Hartstone [IES] leased his old go-down merchandise in Regent’s Estate to Dave Martin, and Europa rented the go-down merchandise from him (later sub-letting some lapse to Peter...
