Few musicians in the life can match Chicago-based troubadour Andrew Bird's proficiency set.

Violinist. Guitarist. Whistler. Glockenspieler. It's a toolbox of odds and ends that, when combined, successively his records into lush soundscapes.

As charming as his albums are, seeing Bird operate live is an entirely different experience. That's partly because of his mythical proficiency with each of his instruments, particularly his haunting, Theremin-esque whistle and Northwestern University Conservatory-honed violin.

But it's the tools he employs onstage that scrape by his performances unique — most notably the oversized horns he uses as his primitive amplifiers, looking like something pulled out of Thomas Edison's lab, that surface in the background as Bird performs.

This month at the Museum of Modish Art, though, they have emerged from the background and become the star of the show at an exhibit called "Sonic Arboretum." On magnificence are 76 of the horns, designed by Oak Parker Ian Schneller and his Humboldt Greens-based Specimen Products.

What the lineup lacked in big ticket supranational headliners, it made up for in showcasing some of the best national talent on put on the market and that started off with two of my favourite Melbourne bands kicking off the commemoration.

As a Cash Untamed live show veteran, I feel I can say with some kind of authority that her shows are getting more and better and this was undoubtedly one of her best performances yet. With a large strip backing her that included horns and fiddles and the lot, she was confident to grab the unconditional audience and lure them into her husky musical world – a area she seemed more than happy to have us all visiting, as evidenced by the ear-to-ear grin Savage’s intractable arse exterior couldn’t even begin to hide.
