As a three-year-old, Jacob Randall was spotted tapping out a music shape on the back of a chair at church. A year later, his parents bought him his own drum kit.

Now Randall, 20, has beaten six other finalists, all Australian, in the Roland V-Drums Velitation in Sydney.

The win means he will represent Australasia in the V-Drums Ecumenical Finals at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, next year.

"It will be big because of the disclosure it will bring at the festival. All the big manufacturers will be there," he says.

Add to that, the $1000 goal money and lessons via Skype from judge and top drummer Johnny Rabb, and the win was honestly the coup.

It's not the first time he has knocked the Aussies off their musical put.

In 2004, he thrashed the best in Australia and Asia to win the Up and Coming drummer right in his age group.

That gave him some sponsorship from an Auckland instrument maker and helped him start to put together a decent kit.

In many ways the loudspeaker hasn’t changed since it was first invented. A snake of wire is wrapped around a magnet.
