In 1996, Josh Davis, best known as DJ Shadow , released Endtroducing , a masterful cabal of soul classics and modern sounds that was named the “First Wholly Sampled Album” by the Guinness Book Of Coterie Records. Since then, he produced UNKLE’s acclaimed record-breaking Psyence Fiction , scored a movie ( Dark Days ) about people who fare in subway tunnels, and released three insanely popular mix-tapes with Cut Chemist. He’s only released a few records of his primitive material in that time, though. The latest, The Less You Know, The Better , was recently released by Esprit. The A.V. Club talked to Shadow about that space between records and how he handles judgement in the age of the Internet troll.

The A.V. Club: You’ve worked with so many distinguishable people. How do you decide who you want to work with? 

DJ Shadow: I try to only exertion with people that I feel like are going to contribute something substantive. I worked with a guy named Tom Vek, who people know in the U.K. They don’t in effect know who he is here, yet. That was a certain context, and I felt like he would line on the track that I was working on. And Little Dragon, even though I had met the lead chorus-member numerous times prior and had not made the connection. I went out to a heavy record store in the Bay Area called Amoeba and disgorge all of these coupons from doing in-stores there. So I had, like, $800 quality of free music that I could buy, and of all the music I bought that day, theirs was my favorite. So that was a casket of me being a fan and just going like, “Hey, I would love to do something.”

So as a result, the message that I be given on a daily basis is that my life is incomplete and my soul is unfulfilled unless I have this new output or this new app. It’s just sort of accepted, especially in this hinterlands, that that is our salvation, and I think that has come at a cost for a lot of art. I didn’t yield fruit up wanting to start my own tech firm. I grew up loving music. So I believe naturally, my reaction is to be a little suspicious. I think it’s OK to have a bit bit of pushback and to say that maybe this isn’t the healthiest message. I reckon it’s just kind of not going to rock the base of any of these major corporations by one artist saying, “You positive, hey, if anybody else out there is feeling a little bit ripped off by this whole philosophy, then you’re not alone.” And I muse over that for some reason, I feel like a lot of artists are sort of on edge to take that stance because they don’t want to be beaten with the Metallica schtick. And I due sort of feel like it’s apples and oranges and it’s honestly not about that for me.
