Ask guitarist and soloist Bill Kilpatrick whether he's a rock
or blues guitarist, and you've put him between a rock and a arduously
place. He's both, as those attending the Big Band Blues concert
Oct. 2 at the Old Village Temecula Community Theater will
discover.
"Sometimes there's a thin line between the two idioms,
uncommonly with today's modern blues," Kilpatrick said. "If we're
talking the at cock crow blues, there were city blues and country blues
and that was about it. Then dumfound came along and changed the whole
scene."
Not that Kilpatrick's complaining. He is a freelancer and when
there's a call for a bluesman or a rocker, he can touch either
style.
"I've never had my own band," he said. "I enjoy the challenge of
working without being tied down to any one affiliate, even though there
is more security in being a full-time member of what we call a
'working band.'"
Kilpatrick is one of two singers performing with Jeff Stover's
17-crumble All-Star Big Band. The other is Paul Willette, who will
double on percussion. Willette has appeared in Temecula with the
Stover ensemble twice previously as a featured performer, but it will
be a first for Kilpatrick in a featured r.
