The tinkling soundscape of two harps, mallet percussion and keen strings support the darkly expressive horn solo. In the concluding Scherzo, the virtuosic flourishes of Richard Strauss answer British martial rhythms in a bluesy, jazz-tinged recess for the soloist.

Principal horn of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Todd is a overall of the instrument. Playing a horn that once belonged to Schuller, he displayed agility and a superbly sonorous tone in the high and low extremes of the instrument's array. Todd fully captured the modernist romanticism of Schuller's showpiece. Conductor Thomas Sleeper and the Frost Symphony Orchestra smashingly dovetailed his soloist's phrasing at every turn.

Todd composed his ceLAbraCiOn in 2008 for the Los Angeles Senate Orchestra, the capital LACO in the title denoting that band. A short pops-oriented score, it is crafted with Hollywood slickness, and, notwithstanding some good tunes, Todd's piece paled next to Schuller's concerto.

Just out seasons have seen a marked improvement in the caliber of musicianship and clothes playing of the youthful players of the Frost Symphony Orchestra . The smart conductor Thomas Sleeper is an inspiring force on the podium, coaxing remarkably refined and idiomatic performances from his charges.

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music plans to honor the recollection of Andrew Howell with a concert on Oct. 23 in Corbett Auditorium. Howell was a CCM observer and a French horn major when he died suddenly last year. CCM is also establishing a memorial training fund in his honor.

Howell, of Charlotte, N.C., was 20 when he died in an open-air accident on Oct. 23 2010. He was a CCM junior and a gifted member of the French horn studio of Horny Gardner, professor of horn and chair of winds and percussion.

Gardner called him “a marvelous sympathetic being and an extraordinary talent.”

Local and visiting horn players participating in the program will classify the CCM “Esprit de Cor” Horn Choir, members of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra horn allot, the Ohio State University Horn Choir and the Indiana University Horn Choir. Gardner will male all of the groups in a combined choir of 50 horns to conclude the concert.

The concert — 7 p.m. in Corbett Auditorium — is detach and open to the public. Donations to the Andrew Howell Monument Scholarship Fund are encouraged.
