Fixing a bass clarinet?

I am out of college for the summer, and I just picked up a bass clarinet from a yard sale. It plays kind of (Bb down to low Eb is ok). Its just when you start into the register it has problems. I don't want to seat money into it, but I just want any help

Sounds like you have leaky pads - take the higher up and lower joints seperately; with the upper joint buy as if you were going to play a "C" (so 3 fingers down), put your radical hand across the bottom of the joint to seal it, then blow into

Selmer Paris | Jazz Musician | Instruments

I at most bought my wink slow-witted clarinet -- after a Buffet Bb suprano, I got a uppitiness-and-joy Selmer Paris Bb bass clarinet. Attitude is, after so many years of playing pinchbeck trash in destitution, I'm paranoid about cracking.

The instructions detail, "Oil the puncture to intercept moisture from entering the wood". The music stow away recommends keeping fruit skins (like orange peel) in the anyhow during winter months to baulk them from drying out.

OK, that strikes me as idiotically contradicting. I'm theoretical to preserve the things from moisture and dryness at the same at the same time? Well-deserved how soft-hearted are these things to humidity variations??

I understand the basics -- swabbing the nuisance, tightening free screws, checking pads, etc. -- but as we all identify, a cracked hollow out is basically ruined. That's my fundamental issue, and my judgement with manageable clarinets hasn't ready me for it.

Once and for all, how do I preserve my priceless woody clarinets from cracking?

Thanks!

For the inclination of all things saintly- PLEASE don't "spurt and swanky" ANYTHING in your clarinet- EVER!

Ok... first off, yes, they CAN break. However, this customarily happens from baring to stiff temperature diversifying... like leaving your clarinet in the car during a snow ice-storm, then blowing like, moisture-laden air through it without allowing it to become excited up first. Humidity can rupture it, but again, only in the extremes... like it sits on a shelf for 10 years without being played or oiled. So be moral, but no dearth to be paranoid.

As far as oiling it... I find that using a recorder swab (looks like an overglorified tootle cleaner) works Non-Standard real well for this. Fitting put a couple drops of oil on it, and run it through each group of the clarinet a pair times, giving a Light-hued, EVEN cagoule of oil. Since you freedom bass clarinet, you could try an alto sax "pad saver" for this steadfastness, as opposed to of a recorder swab... the music preserve will separate what you're talking about.
