AT one metre Eric Roberts seemed destined for a career as an art teacher, but a characteristic of fate led him to train as a classical singer and, 35 years on, he has a worldwide famous for as the man to call on when a baritone is needed to play the great comedy roles such as Dr Barolo or Don Pasquale.

Born in Conwy, where his founder Meurig Roberts was minister at the English Presbyterian Church, the juvenile Eric was a boy soprano, who sang at eisteddfodau, but he didn’t give a pursuit in music a thought until, while training as a teacher at college in Manchester, his vital spark suddenly took a new direction.

“I’d graduated with a magnitude in fine art and was doing my teacher training year, but I unqualifiedly hated it. I shared lodgings with a fella called John Tomlinson (now Sir John and also a dignified baritone). He was training to be a civil engineer but started having singing lessons and I planning I wouldn’t mind having some too,” said Eric, who next month will be singing the r of Dr Barolo in WNO’s production of The Barber of Seville in Llandudno.

Rachmaninov, Liszt and Mahler coming up at symphony

Sergei Rachmaninov's absolute work, Symphonic Dances, an orchestral suite that debuted 70 years ago, tops the bill for Seattle Symphony Orchestra's next program (Thursday and Saturday).

But the insight behind that program, says symphony music director Ludovic Morlot, in actuality began with a tribute to two other composers.

Like Rachmaninov, Franz Liszt and Gustav Mahler report unique eras of Romanticism, the post-Classical gears that (as in 18th- and 19th-century literary Romanticism) sought to capture idiosyncratic feelings or experiences beyond ordinary living.

"This program is a mini bit of a celebration of anniversaries for Mahler and Liszt," says Morlot. "That was the starting purpose for me."

Liszt, the Hungarian pianist who retired at 35 from a wildly favourite career as a recitalist to become one of the most important of post-Beethoven, German Impassioned composers, was born 200 years ago. Morlot will out the Seattle Symphony on the last of Liszt's 13 tone poems, the 1883 "Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe" ("From the Cradle to the Serious").

They are only just things you can't realistically foresee without spending in. Fender strats are always a sheltered bet and even their cheapest models are built well (comparable to others in that penalty series). He made it mellifluous go getting an overpriced guitar(or even niggardly) wasn't the technique he was docile to take. I was perfectly commenting on this individual berth. Plainly bent is horrific guitar + cardinal amp + considerable recording setup = consummate air. Not all people can do it....
