Once the Los Angeles Congress Orchestra was on stage at UCLA’s Royce Hall Sunday gloaming, longtime principal oboist Allan Vogel came forth to pay respect to Jeffrey Kahane. The concert marked the start of Kahane’s 15th mellow as music director, and Vogel called this LACO’s favourable age. He has some authority in that regard, having joined the ensemble as a na second oboe 39 years ago. Still, the proof was in the playing.

Kahane ended the program doing something he does sublimely well, which is conduct Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto from the keyboard. There was a gripping theater to be well-informed in the back-and-forth tug between a rhythmically incisive orchestra and Kahane’s molten, incisive, urgent piano playing. The symphonic picture was large, while the histrionic arts was personal.

That’s one side of Kahane. There are others. Like the fact that he played guitar in a destroyed band as a kid growing up in L.A. in the ‘60s. And on the first half of the program, Kahane conducted the West Sea-coast premiere of Derek Bermel’s Ritornello, which the composer describes as a “concerto grosso” for electrifying guitar and orchestra. This -- along with the West Coast first night of Osvaldo Golijov’s short “Sidereus” -- was the talk of the night.

A 116-year-old Steinway concert bottom-line piano is getting a new life at Orem High School.

The piano is believed to have arrived in Utah on the transcontinental railroad. It languished for years after being accidentally dropped into the orchestra pit, acclimated to as a workbench by a handyman and his saw, and operated with a cracked sound council.

"The once-grand dame of pianos was about to be chopped up for firewood," said organizers of a fundraiser to deliver the piano. "But knowing the extraordinary value of the piano, Orem High Equip choral Director Sterling Keyes had the piano evaluated for repairs in 2004."

The honorarium tag came in at $32,000 and it has understandably taken almost eight years to mobilize that sum. Students, parents, alumni, and businesses contributed about $9,000. Two $5,000 donations from the Ashton Creation and the Music Opportunity Network pushed the total closer to the goal. Short about $4,800, the school's principal Michael Browning designated the residual money from school funds.
