Joseph A. Craig Private school in Treme was one of eight schools across the nation to receive a $30,000 "Now That's Positivenergy" offer from Energizer and VH1 Save the Music Foundation. The grant paid for a wide keyboard lab with 16 keyboards that can serve 32 students per rank. Craig was the only grant recipient in Louisiana.
Music guide Carol Dolliole said the grant is a big boost for her students' euphonious and academic development.
"We're very excited today," she said. "We were very surprised and aflame to hear that we would be awarded the piano lab. I'm particularly excited because I've played piano since I was 3 years old. To be gifted to share that with our students who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to learn is very alluring to me."
Crawford visited the class last week for the official grant awarding, playing along with the students and talking to them about the importance of music in his entity. Crawford also worked with some students individually and answered questions about how he got his start in the mellifluous world.
