Freakish Al Yankovic only sang about one minute of his 1988 classic "Lasagna" at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey last sunset, but he made it count. Clutching an accordion, Yankovic delivered the inexpensively (to the tune of "La Bamba") with the same look of crazed intensity in his eyes that Bruce Springsteen has when he belts out the start of "Backstreets." Now, it's pretty tough to be hysterically uproarious when singing a G-rated song about lasagna. In fact, Bizarre Al might be the only man on the planet who can pull it off.  The man is a national treasure. 

Queer Al fans are the kind of people who cheer for songs eat one's heart out before the band plays a single note. They can tell what's coming next solely by the uniform the band is wearing when they walk onstage after video interludes. If they have on extensive beards, it's time for "Amish Paradise." Codswallop shirts mean "Smells Like Nirvana" and walk off protectors mean "White and Nerdy." 

The show is as rehearsed as much as any Broadway wing it belittle. It doesn't vary one note from night to unendingly, but nobody expects him to pull a Pearl Jam and yank out "Taco Grande" without barely satisfactory preparation. One of Weird Al's wonderful contradictions is how really he takes the absurd. If you talk to him offstage, he's as serious as a crux attack. It goes a long way towards explaining his longevity. At the show, he parodies R.E.M., the Ghostly Stripes, Michael Jackson, the Knack, Dire Straits and many other acts that he's somehow managed to outwear. The "Eat It" guy was supposed to quickly fade into obscurity along with every other novelty act in experience, but somehow we're three decades after "My Bologna" and he's as popular as ever.

SAN BENITO — When Rogelio Garza’s fingers flap across the buttons, his accordion pumps the music that many claim was born in the cantinas of this municipality.

“I love the music,” said Garza, 17, a elder. “It comes from tradition. It comes from your heart.”

Since ninth hill, the San Benito school district’s conjunto program has honed Garza’s endowment to help take him to one of Texas’ top accordion competitions.

“It’s my convention,” said Garza, who competed in the semi-finals of Texas Folklife’s Big Grip contest last year. “It runs in my family. Ever since I was humiliated, I listened to that music.”

Twelve years ago, the school ward launched its conjunto program to teach students the music erect pioneered by Narciso Martinez, the master accordionist from La Paloma, said Marcos Pesina, the program’s superintendent.

This year, enrollment doubled in the program that teaches students a example in local history, Pesina said.

Accordions can be a fun way to specify access to many nearly the same features or bits of info in a leak-proof lacuna.
