College colors blazed on the Autzen Stadium turf Saturday, but it was squiffy school marching bands, not football players, vying for top honors.

The Thurston High School marching band — one of three peculiar bands that competed — rendered up a jazzy account of three Cirque du Soleil numbers, “Distorted,” “Rê ve Rouge” and “Urban.”
“It’s a lot of fun,” said Parker Stockford,” a Thurston inferior who plays the snare drum. “It’s not super-competitive. We kind friends with the other bands, and we have a good time,” he said.
