It’s guitar surprise, but not as we know it. Anna Calvi, the Londoner in her late twenties whose initiation album created a stir earlier this year and earned her a Mercury Haul nomination, makes music that has all the familiar, recognisable elements of the music that we call “throw” – guitar, vocals, drums – but her treatment of it is idiosyncratic; she exploits the spaces between the instruments as much as the instruments themselves to fabricate a dark mood, an atmosphere of heightened sexual jitteriness.

It takes a bit of getting used to. At a sold-out Shepherds Bush Empire, on the London leg of her UK drive, for the first couple of songs I have to confess that I was a bit nonplussed: partly, I mull over this was because, like an old wireless set, the band’s “valves” took a while to loving up, but chiefly it was because there’s something disturbingly empty about her music. Most bands performing in the destroyed idiom are scared of space; they fill it up with more guitars and keyboards and voices. But Anna Calvi justified gives space its own... well, space.

Prominent Drummer Mike Clark Produces Singer Tony Adamo's new CD

"Yo' into somethin' bro," was Mike Clark's comment to Tony Adamo when he heard Adamo's new vocalize/hip verbal word. This was the deciding moment when Clark, legendary drummer and co-bandmaster of the Headhunters, formerly (Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters) decided to give rise to Adamo's new CD. The recording site was Owl Studio Records (Unmoving Shack Studios), Indianapolis, Indiana. Clark started things off by bringing in wonderful percussionist and long time Headhunter band fellow, Bill Summers who laid down his percussion tracks at an earlier recording hearing along with Rob Dixon (tenor, alto and keyboards), and Gary Mielke (bass, keyboards). Two Owl recording artists Derrick Gardner (trumpet) and Pharez Whitted (trumpet) added their mojo jazz/funk chops

A Grammy for Tabla

Eminent Indian tabla* maestro Zakir Hussain has won the Grammy bestow in the Coetaneous Fabulous Music Album department for his collaborative album International Drum Draw up.

Zakir Hussain shared the Grammy present with Mickey Hart, Sikiru Adepoju and Giovanni Hidalgo who were the members of Wide-ranging Drum turn.

Mickey Hart is a percussionist and musicologist. “This is a rich drumming scratch. We’re compelling the archaic tempo worlds into outer spell.
