Maybe time doesn’t reconcile all wounds, but it certainly can ease the sting. After spending countless years immersed in downfall, sorrow and isolation, Iowa singer-songwriter William Elliott Whitmore lastly sounds unburdened. His latest album, the acoustic nation leaning “Field Songs” (Anti Records), comes across like the line of a man who’s weathered the hard times and can now look forward to preferably days ahead.

“Everyone goes through their hardships,” said Whitmore, who performs at the Stoughton Opera Harbour on Saturday, Oct. 8, “But I can’t poison my mind dwelling on adversary things forever.”

Though only in his early 30s, Whitmore has experienced as much darkness as most men many years his higher- ranking. On New Year’s Day in 1995 the singer’s father passed away after a long bout with cancer; three years later, his mother died in a motorcycle luck.
