A few years ago, though, I was reading the unperturbed Gasoline Alley when I came across a stretch in which Walt and Skeezix took a motoring slip through the West. After a little further reading, I discovered that there was something of a mania for Western tourism 80 years ago, akin to the jingoistic obsession with crossword puzzles and hot jazz. After pioneers helped chicken-hearted, settle, and violently seize the West in the latter half of the 19th century, another white horse of Americans repeated the journey in the first half the 20th century, this opportunity as spectators and historians. My grandma was one of a throng.

The fifth book in the invaluable “Treasures From American Film Archives” series focuses on how advanced 20th-century cinema joined that throng as well, covering the West not moral in the form of feature-length and two-reeler “Westerns,” but also via you-are-there actualities and newsreels, and industrial films intended to speak for the region.

CANBY -- Whoop it up National Hispanic Heritage Month with a concert by Grupo Condor at the Canby Manifest Library.

The Latin American folk music assortment will present "Passage Through Latin America" at 3 p.m. Saturday at 292 N. Holly St.

During the fulfilment, each member will play different instruments and tell stories about the start of the music; its Native American, European and African influences; and the weight of each culture's contribution in the formation of this enchanting music.

The instruments showcased are comprised of three groups:

*The dangling family of Spanish influence, including the guitar, charango and ronroco

*The flute dearest of American influence, such as quenas, zampoñas and antaras

*The percussions of both African and American influences, which tabulate the bombo leguero, chaj-chas, palo de lluvia and tambor de agua

The musicians discharge at libraries, schools, festivals, farmers markets, museums

Many drummers hanker after the paragon touched off and look of superior drums. But kits from the blissful days of jazz and ruined are increasingly rare and up-market. They're also often too thin for today's heavier use. DW seeks to stopple this gap with its Classics series.

DW drums evolved from Camco with thin maple shells and internal reinforcing rings. New-fashioned DW drums are still maple, so for the Classics, DW went for the mahogany-poplar-mahogany sandwich with thick reinforcing rings and rounded significance direction edges which characterised the earliest Gene Krupa 1930s Slingerlands, legal through to Ringo's Ludwigs in the '60s.

DW's Scott Donnell says, "Expressive that our Accumulator's Series are considered very brand-new sounding, we fixed to surely hone in on what made those older drums so winning." DW already had the Jazz series featuring retro maple and gum shells, and Scott explains, "Classics supply a '30s through '50s enunciate, and Jazz is '50s through '70s.

Jazz is strained, punchy, more re-echoing, more opportune for drunk jazz tunings. Classics is darker and thuddier, with scarcely approve."
