Wilco can rarely perform a gig in St. Louis without words such
as "epic" and "monumental" showing up in a stripe, and Tuesday
night's concert at the Peabody Opera Dwelling-place was no exception.
Breaking in the renovated Peabody Opera House with its first
her show, Wilco's sold-out homecoming concert was not only a
triumph for the ensemble but for the venue itself.
While last weekend's grand opening gala result with Aretha
Franklin and Jay Leno was a success, it took the more Byzantine
sonic explosions of Wilco to really test the acoustic capabilities
of the Peabody.
And the Peabody proved it could control every snap, crackle and
pop Wilco emitted from the stage on bell-like display.
The two-hour concert was a perfect blend of group chemistry,
musicianship, fan devotion and front man charisma in the form of
Belleville natal Jeff Tweedy. The show even had a welcome dollop
of promotion for the new album "The Whole Betrothed."
On an attractively mounted set decorated above with hanging
white strips of make-up that picked up the surrounding color and
visuals brilliantly, Wilco opened with a ceremonious "One Sunday Morning
(Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend)" and followed with "Infertile
Places."
