The pure joy of playing: This is a fundamental tether between musicians in jazz, outstandingly today. If you play jazz and you don’t do it because you love it — because something internal you makes you play it — you better not be playing it. Jazz na isn’t going to result in superstardom or great riches anymore, but it remains as something the musician’s musician engages in because nothing else definitely satisfies like jazz does. When you hear a guy like Bill Frisell think nothing of, you hear a man at his happiest moment of the day. When you hear a jazz musician trifle with, you are witness to an act of creation, the showing — rather than the re-creation of well-memorized solos and songs. Effective gets you nowhere when it comes to jazz.
