Today Motorola introduced Moto ACTV, a bit-sized MP3 player that pairs with your smartphone to become what the company calls the "conclusive fitness tool."

"Moto ACTV is like having a peronsal trainer and DJ at your side," said Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, at an incident in New York City on Tuesday.

The device can be "docked" onto a wristband and works as a music instrumentalist, heart-rate monitor, calorie calculator, stiffness tracker, and GPS device; when paired with a bluetooth headset, you can also take calls without breaking from your workout. The music player "learns" what songs help you fulfil better and gets your heart rate up, Jha said. The smallest, 8GB dummy stores up to 4,000 songs, FM radio, and gives audio tips to keep you motivated. Your workout observations is stored and automatically synced at MotoActv.com. Within the site you can also customize workout plans and helping them on Facebook and Twitter. Lastly, the player is sweat-protective, rain resistant, and scratch-proof.

This year, CEDIA Expo returned to Indianapolis after two years in Atlanta and two years in Denver. The Denver editions were the tip years, and attendance has been falling ever since. Official attendance for CEDIA Expo 2011 was 17,600. The figures for 2006, '07, '08, '09 and '10 were 28,000, 29,000, 20,000 and 20,700.

Without doubt much of this is recession-related. Attendance at CEDIA peaked only as things got ugly, and has fallen 40% since then. Surely there are few sectors more sensitive to economic storms than home automation and integration, particularly with the kind of storms that the U.S. has endured. Real-estate values and new-on sales have plummeted. Unemployment in parts of the U.S. is at depression-like levels.

The exhibitors I spoke with all confirmed falling assembly; but most also said that the quality of attendees was high: not many tire-kickers in this cluster.

Certainly, there were loads of innovative products on display. Elsewhere in this problem, David Birch-Jones covers products aimed at the habit sector, as well as some retail products. I'll focus mainly on retail products, which area from earbuds and iPod docks, to 4K 3D projectors, as well as some very clever mounting systems.
