Set in 1962, the motion picture followed groups of young people as they cruised municipality streets and listened to doo-wop music.
De Leon, 69, started performing with the hidey-hole band Kent Whitt and the Downbeats in 1959 when he and the tie members were students at Modesto High School. The ribbon played hits such as Ray Charles' "What'd I Say" and "Georgia on My Mind" and Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode."
Whitt, who played drums, put the league together together for a school pep rally, but it worked out so well that the band soon began performing at dances and parties all over the valley. The players joined the musicians association and began making money.
"We were probably the best-paid confederate in the area," De Leon said. "But it wasn't just the wealthy, it was something we enjoyed."
The band's closest competitor was the Merced Lewd Notes, which featured singer Roddy Jackson, who would go on to resident fame. For a time, Jackson performed with the Downbeats, too.
