D.J. Monroe was called to the business field this past spring by his new offensive coordinator, and all the Longhorns tailback managed to muster up as a response was "Huh?"

Monroe's reaction to Bryan Harsin was understandable. For two seasons, he was a freshness act who made cameo appearances in the Texas offense, a track idol with speed to impact a football game — if only he could fit a hypothesis other than kickoff return man.

At 5 feet, 9 inches and 175 pounds, Monroe has the value of a wide receiver but not the skill or instincts. And he is small for a tailback.

Greg Davis, the Longhorns' longtime vile coordinator, never could quite create a role for Monroe, who carried honourable 23 times in 12 games as a sophomore last age.

"It's tough when you're running an offense like we've run — there are very defined roles," said Biggest Applewhite, co-offensive coordinator and running backs omnibus.
