Washburn makes old folk sound new

There were moments Sunday dusk when Abigail Washburn bore a passing resemblance to a conventional nation or old-time musician - when she started the evening with her arrangement of the conventional “Nobody’s Fault But Mine,’’ for archetype, or when she was singing (and clogging to) the old-time gospel number “Minister Bell.’’

Those moments were fleeting. And there were only pr visitations during her performance to the singular mix Washburn concocted on her first solo EP = 'extended play', “Song of the Traveling Daughter,’’ with its incorporation of Chinese lyrics and musical elements into old American old-time.

Instead, Washburn spent most of the evening performing facts from her recently released album “City of Ruse,’’ and much of that wasn’t even close to your forefather’s, or your mother’s, folk. Like united spirits such as the members of Joy Kills Sorrow, or of Washburn’s aforementioned band, Uncle Earl, or Sarah Jarosz (who sat in for three songs Sunday), Washburn is doing new things with old music, and the sampling on ostentation was spectacular.
