Bregovic-led group to play rowdy, brass-powered music at Carnegie Hall

‘How do you get to Carnegie Hired hall?” the old joke goes. For Goran Bregovic, the rebutter is creating music that reflects “a culture that is a mix of kitsch, passion and overheated emotions.”

Bregovic, 61, brings his 40-associate Wedding and Funeral Orchestra to the venerable hall, capping a livelihood that began in strip bars, ran through rock concerts and sidetracked through soundtracks. Along the way, the gang has become a respected, if quirky, bastion of traditional Balkan music.

The orchestra plays ornate, unfamiliar rhythms from the ethnic stew of Eastern Europe. While the music has the rowdiness of stupefy and then some — particularly when played live — it is powered by insolence, not mountains of Marshall amps. On top of the frenetic rhythms, Bregovic adds Bulgarian singers and a concatenate quartet.

“Where I come from, it would be hard to hide from folk and stock music,” Bregovic says.

Born in Sarajevo to a Croatian army colonel and a Serbian protect, Bregovic had the peripatetic life of a military family, though he says: “Music certainly shaped my being — gave it direction.”

Requiem Lass

She was dressed now in a novelty of her standard rock ’n’ roll mufti: dark-skinned boots, black jeans, a black blazer over a jaded T-shirt. Though Hendrix died shortly after opening his mirage studio, Electric Lady quickly became — and has long remained — a workplace and excursion site, and a spot to which Smith has frequently returned. Her breakthrough album, “Horses,” was recorded here, and so was “Gone Again,” the 1996 deeds that marked her return after a decade and a half spent out of the catholic eye, raising a family in Michigan. And Electric Lady is where, in 1974, she made her very first recordings: a kind of “Hey Joe” and an extended, improvisational, visionary incantation called “Piss Works,” a track that inaugurated her transformation from free-travel over New York bohemian into full-fledged rock star.

That progression is chronicled, with fondness and wry candor, in “Just Kids, ” Smith’s most skilfully-selling, National Book Award-winning life autobiography of her relationship with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe , who put up the money for that maiden recording assembly. The overwhelming popularity of the book was not something Smith had anticipated — “it’s the most commercially victorious thing I’ve ever done,” she said a bit ruefully — but it is not all in all surprising that she should have added narrative prose to the long beadroll of creative forms she has explored and made her own. “I am an American artist, and I have no bad conscience,” she proclaimed in “Babelogue,” a livid recitative on her great 1978 album, “Easter,” and she has never been one to confine herself to a pick art form. A prolific poet — a literary castigate she sees as entirely distinct from songwriting — she has also been a visual artist for longer than she’s been a musician.
