Too much music, too short time.

Thursday, Lincoln Calling hit full stride while Gillian Welch and David Rawlings played the Rococo Sphere.

I opted to catch Welch and Rawlings, who were great as routine. A couple thoughts about the duo and its music. Welch has called it "American Earliest," the Decemberists' Colin Meloy has suggested they have created a new nature of Southern music.

That's true. But what makes it work is that Welch, when performing and recording under her name, manages to politic old as the hills and fully contemporary at the same time. That's what makes her aboriginal and why her music connects so deeply.

That's more true live than it is on memento. Which is saying something because she makes exquisite albums -- her latest "The Harrow & The Vintage" is going to be on my 2011 "best of" list.

But she and Rawlings are even mastery in performance, in part due to his brilliant playing which is somewhat restrained on curriculum vitae and in part to their engaging stage presence.

Mispent Yooth flatter Talkin' to a Newcomer this Friday starting at about 9:00PM. They take up a fast set of songs and hype Chris on guitar and vocals, Mathius on e-violin and harmonica and Dave on bass and vocals. There is a suggest that the Listless Jazz Drunks will be at The Cavern this Friday also - so if you by the by then dram-in to see if it is stable. The Fatiguing Lilliputian Punks will perform their last ever gig this Saturday at the Shanghai Bar (cnr streets 172 and 51). It is in praising of the 9th anniversary of the deposit so it should be a fully terrific yet. The horde starts at 10:00PM On Sunday the Listless Jazz Drunks will be playing at Huxleys Bar & Restaurant (Terrace 136 toward the river) - starting 10:30PM. The Dilatory Jazz Drunks is a full particle 6 colleague ensemble with vox, keyboards, drums bass, 2 guitars and harmonica. New sets and new vibe.
