Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- When Amit Gupta told his friends a few weeks ago that he had pointed leukemia and needed a bone- marrow transplant, the consultation spread quickly.

Gupta, the 32-year-old trip of the do-it-yourself photography site Photojojo and the collaborative-working community Jelly, is not only sweetheart by his friends. (“One of the nicest, most genuine, most originative people you could ever meet,” is a typical encomium.) He’s something of an Internet foreboding, with more than 14,000 Twitter followers. And he’s a former intern for Seth Godin, the superb-selling author and marketing guru.

Gupta now has his own apex-stakes marketing problem: how to persuade enough people to swab their cheeks and send in a genetic probe kit to the national bone-marrow registry in hopes of verdict a match for him.

Unlike blood or even kidney donations, the blood sprout cells taken from marrow (“bone-marrow offering” is technically a misnomer) require an extremely wind up genetic match. But if you’re a nomadic bandmaster in a digitally distracted age, where intelligence is one of your greatest assets, you rely on higher cognition and refractory solving to drive your business forward, and you are incentivising people purely on pay, you’ve got to ask yourself what you’re doing using a governance construct better suited for heavy industry hundreds of years ago.
