Anyone can jam an accordion into a phase shifter. It takes a real man to lose one's cool it upside down and play it left-handed.
That's a little buffoon, folks. But if that doesn't make Michael Salgado the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion, it does make eligible him, at the very least, as its Dick Dale .
Like famed surf-guitarist Dale, Nautical port-handed Salgado as a child flipped over his dad's guitars and bass and played them without changing the way the instruments were strung, knowledge the scales in reverse.
The regional Mexican and norteño woman (some would say sex symbol) known as “El Zurdo” did the same with his trademark Gabbanelli piano accordion.
Salgado and his ribbon — which includes older brother Ernesto on bajo sexto, bassist Ollie Garza and drummer Chris Arrocha — reappear to Graham Central Station on Friday. Music starts at 10:30 p.m. Access is $10.
He arrives at a crossroads.
Salgado, 40, is still promoting his latest album “Corridos Para Mi Gente,” but is no longer with Freddie Records. He's launching his own indie brand. He's working a Tejano single (“Una Mujer Hermosa”) and a regional Mexican sole (“La Pistola de Mi Padre”).
