Accommodations to one of the biggest ukulele festivals in the country, Cairns can now add another string to its ukulele strain: the first store to stock ukes from renowned Australian guitar maker.

It’s the trade-mark Tommy Emmanuel, John Butler and countless other guitar heroes hold on when it comes to their instrument.

Maton, the Australian company prominent for its guitars, has downsized, just a little, to create the supreme ukulele.

It’s a move that had Music City manager Rick Montgomery in raptures as he welcomed the first 20 ukuleles hot from the Maton works to his Cairns shop yesterday.

"Cairns is the only correct position selling them in the country," he said.

Each instrument is numbered, and Mr Montgomery has the fulfil of selling No. 2 to No. 21 (No. 1 was auctioned off and sold to the highest bidder in Sweden last month).

Rick and his son Ryo, also working at the market, pulled every one from its case to look at, admiring each ukulele for its subtle difference.

Customarily festival organizers make things bigger to impart them better, but that's not the case with the California Surf Museum's fourth annual California Surf Red-letter day this weekend.

"We've scaled it down a little and are just holding it at the Sunshine Brooks Arena theatre," reported Julie Cox, operations manager for the museum. "In the days of yore, we've had two theaters running films, but that was a bit too complicated to coordinate and things kept bumping into each other. So we determined to be more focused and do everything well."

However, one major addition to the festival allows for more socializing. The Aloha Area is a "hangout" area at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre.

"It's a post for people to mix and mingle before the films," Cox explained. "There will be beer and wine and room music. Each night, the room will be transformed into that evening's essay. For instance, Friday is "ladies who surf" night, so the apartment will be dressed up with women's boards and breast casts for tit cancer awareness."
